[EXPLORE THE WORLD] Sweden & Lebanon

Date: 25 March 2023 Author: Alizée

Did you know? That in Lebanon, you can spend the morning skiing in the mountains, and then go swimming in the ocean by the beach after lunch? And also that many modern-day inventions like dynamite, milk cartons, and Bluetooth were invented by Swedish people? These were just a few of the things that the kids learned at SYLC’s latest Explore the World project.

For the 7th edition held on March 25, SYLC members taught the kids about Sweden’s long winters and short summers, how to sing happy birthday in Swedish, and that there aren’t (!) any polar bears in Sweden! They also learned about the beautiful Falougha Lakes, Jbail and Jeita Grotto, and some of Lebanon’s most representative dishes!

The cultural ambassadors Alizée and Andy, together with a local cultural ambassador Karni, introduced the geography, famous places and people, key cultural features and traditions, and foods of both countries. On top of that, the kids danced ‘Little Frogs’ around an imaginary Swedish midsummer pole and tried out the traditional Lebanese Dabke dance. They also got to enjoy a Swedish-style coffee break ‘Fika’ and taste delicious Lebanese baklava.

Project Explore the World is just one example of the diverse projects that SYLC organizes to support children and others in underprivileged communities. If you’re interested in presenting your own home country to the kids or joining any of our other events, send us a message! We conduct community service activities almost every week.
