Seoul Young Leaders Club

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the Seoul Young Leaders Club (SYLC)?

A: The Seoul Young Leaders Club is a Rotary club, a part of our mother club the Seoul Rotary Club (Rotary International District 3650).

Q: What does the SYLC do?

A: The SYLC is an organization that would like to give something back to society. We volunteer, support several charities, and organize fundraisers. But above all, we aim to recruit and maintain young, like-minded service-oriented community leaders. We create life-long friendships amongst each other.

Q: Can everyone join the Seoul Young Leaders Club?

A: Everyone between the age of 18-40 years old is welcome to apply for membership. But before applying, please join our general meeting and/or our community service once, without obligations. We would like to get to know each other before becoming a member. Nationality, profession, or background is irrelevant. Please note that the spoken language during our general meetings is English.

Q: Who does the Seoul Young Leaders Club support or what kind of community services are organized?

A: The SYLC currently supports an unwed mothers’ organization called Intree. There is still a stigma in South Korea on getting pregnant out of wedlock. We aim to give the children of the unwed mothers’ unforgettable youth memories, so we take them out once a month on a fun event. This can be for example a sports game, an ice-skating rink, or we organize a theme party for those children. We can honestly say that we became ‘big sisters’ and ‘big brothers’ to those children.

The Seoul Young Leaders Club also supports the Korean Red Cross. We organize blood-donation events with language supports so that foreign residents of Seoul can also donate their blood.

We have organized several fundraisers over the past as well. The most recent one was a fundraiser to support the Korean healthcare workers, who worked extremely hard when the COVID-19 pandemic first appeared in Korea. Under the name Cookies For Our Heroes, we kept an online fundraiser and donated cookies, soft drinks, energy bars, chocolates, and vitamin drinks (worth over 3,500,000 KRW) to health care workers in some of the hardest-hit hospitals in Korea.

Q: How can I become a member of the SYLC?

A: We have a membership application form, but please join first our general meeting and/or our community service. Becoming a member isn’t difficult, but we’d like to get to know each other first. To join one of our events, please contact us via the contact form on this website, by e-mail (rotarysylc@gmail.com), or on our social media.

Q: Is it free to become an SYLC member?A: No, it is not. But nobody is making money out of your membership fee. A membership costs 300.000 KRW per year and the money goes partially to your subscription at the Rotary International office, partially it goes to the Rotary District 3650 (Seoul, north of Han-River), and partially it is used over the year for our activities/community service. Our finance is transparent for our members and expenses are only done after a members-vote. Please note that the Rotary year starts on the 1st of July and ends on the 30th of June the year after.
